Honourable W. Z. Estey The Estey Centre laments the passing of Mr. Justice Willard (Bud) Estey on January 25, 2002. For a number of years, Mr. Estey had become increasingly concerned about the need to build Canadian expertise in international trade issues, particularly international trade law and policy. He thus conceived of and spearheaded the establishment of the Estey Centre, and devoted considerable time and personal resources to it during the last several years of his life. The Centre could be his greatest legacy. Willard Estey retired as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1988. He had previously served as a Justice of the Court of Appeal and later Chief Justice of the High Court, Supreme Court of Ontario, and Chief Justice of Ontario. He was subsequently engaged in private practice as counsel and as an independent arbitrator, and was a director of several major Canadian corporations. Justice Estey was involved in a number of Royal Commissions and inquiries, and most recently, in 1998, he conducted a review of the western grain industry for the Government of Canada. He held degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and Harvard University, and honourary doctorates from several other Canadian universities. He served as a Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada, and President of the Canadian Bar Association, Ontario. Justice Estey was a Companion of the Order of Canada. |
